getの語源は、古英語の「gietan」や古高ドイツ語の「gezzan」に由来します。これらは、取る、得る、到達する、獲得するなどの意味を持っています。現代英語のgetは、これらの語から派生したものであり、さまざまな意味を持つ非常に多用される動詞です。
getの類語と使い分け
- 一般的な意味の「手に入れる」「得る」を含め、様々なニュアンスがある。例えば「get over」は「乗り越える」「立ち直る」、「get through」は「乗り越える」「通り抜ける」、「get away」は「逃げる」「離れる」、「get along」は「うまくやっていく」「仲良くやっていく」といった具合である。
- 「get」よりもフォーマルな印象があり、専門的な知識や技術、財産などを手に入れる場合に使用する。
